Places
At AGSI, we identify places. Places are defined as areas with definite or indefinite boundaries containing a portion of space. The AGSI Place database contains place polygons at national, provincial, county, township and municipal levels.
Places have two different types of definitions in our solutions. The first is the formal municipality or current legal name. The second type of place is that identified as a common location. For example in Wellington County there are now eight official municipalities as identified in purple text. The text boxes identify some of the historically or commonly known places (purple polygons.)
Many of these were at some point in the past a legal entity unto themselves, and in most cases, residents and businesses there still use the names.
The second graphic of Middlesex County demonstrates place types such as upper, lower and single tier municipalities as well as native reserves. AGSI also houses historical boundaries which are no longer recognized legally, but are still commonly used.
