AGSI In The Community - November 21, 2008
The following excerpt was taken from www.independentfreepress.com a news article dated November 6, 2008.
In the their final practice prior to the Ontario Provincial X-Country Running Championships two members of Canada's 2008 Olympic Team, Eric Gillis (back left) and Taylor Milne (forefront) recently trained and spoke with the Halton Hills-based AGSI Flyers cross-country running team at the Gellert Community Centre. Gillis competed in the 10,000m race in Beijing while Miline ran in the 1,500m event. The AGSI Flyers pictured with the Olympians (from left) are: Maddie Shiell, Mackenzie Cameron, Rebecca Scott, Julia Zebarth, Lindsay Cameron. The session with Gillis and Milne seemed to rub off on the Flyers as their athletes turned in their best performances of the year out of the 31 competing teams.
After being told they'd won bronze medals at the recent provincial championships, members of a local track club's Mite girls' team saw their fortunes turn golden upon a double-checking of the final results. AGSI Flyers' head coach Chris Cameron asked organizers to review the results and they discovered that the final standings had been miscalculated, showing that the Flyers had won the MTA team title with 28 points, followed by Brooklin and Burlington tied at 31 points each.
"I do not think there is a truer example of competition and team counting where placement of every member has meant so much to be crowned the Champions." Cameron said.
The four AGSI Flyer Mite girls' (ages 7-8) runners-Rachel Carson, Marin Shiell, Julieanne Gallant and Ainsley Cooper- all recorded top-20 finishes in their race and were re-presented with their first-place gold medals by meet officials.
The whole team competed very well in the final MTA X-Country event of the year and the Flyers had their best-ever team finish, earning gold (Mite) and silver medals (Tyke) while the Atom and Senior Girls finished 8th and 6th respectively. The best individual Flyer finish of the day came after a gutsy duel ended when Mackenzie Cameron was nipped over the final hill to the finish in the overall silver medal position in the Tyke division. AGSI is extremely proud of how our girls trained, improved, and competed over the season.
The team will all be heading over to Guelph, Ontario on Saturday November 29th to enjoy the AGSI National X-Country Championships where this year's best Canadian athletes will compete for coveted positions on Canada's National Team and a trip to the IAAF World Championships in Amman, Jordan.
